Bathinda is a city and the administrative headquarters of Bathinda District in the north-western Indian state of Punjab. One of the oldest cities in Punjab, Bathinda today is a highly industrialized center and is home to two modern thermal power plants, Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant and Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant.
Geographically, Bathinda is a part of the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains. It is surrounded by the Faridkot and Mukatsar districts in the north and west, the Sangrur and Mansa districts in the east, and the state of Haryana in the south.
Some of the major industries in this region are food-grain, cotton, fertilizer, petrochemical, textile, and sugar. In an effort to make Bathinda a model city of Punjab, the government has proposed to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) for the textile industry, an international cricket stadium and academy, a flying school, airport, and an air-conditioned bus stand within the next three years. Bathinda is also an educational hub, with many known private institutes located in the city.
Bathinda has witnessed a steep incline in the real estate prices in recent times owing to the rate of urbanisation.
