About Bellary

Bellary is a historic city in the Bellary district of the Indian state of Karnataka. The city derives its name from the word ‘Balari’, which refers to goddess Durugamma. Bellary is known for the numerous iron and steel plants, whose presence can be attributed to the availability of huge deposits of iron and manganese ore in the Sanduru hill ranges.

Apart from for the production of iron and steel, Bellary is known for its textile and garment units. The growth of the famous cotton and silk “Ilkal” sari is credited to the patronage provided by the local chieftains in and around the town of Bellary. Moreover, since granite rocks and hills form an important feature of Bellary, granite quarrying is big business.

Bellary lies in the semi-arid region of Karnataka and the district shares its borders with the Raichur district on the north, Chitradurga and Davanagere districts on the south, Anantapur and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh on the east and Koppal district on the west.
