Bellary is a historic city in the Bellary district of the Indian state of Karnataka. The city derives its name from the word ‘Balari’, which refers to goddess Durugamma. Bellary is known for the numerous iron and steel plants, whose presence can be attributed to the availability of huge deposits of iron and manganese ore in the Sanduru hill ranges.

Apart from for the production of iron and steel, Bellary is known for its textile and garment units.
