About Calicut

Nestled in god’s own country, Calicut is the third-largest city in Kerala and a part of the second-largest urban agglomeration in the state. The port city spread along the Malabar Coast has often been called the city of spices for its crucial role as a trading point for eastern spices.

The city played a vital role in trade and commerce throughout history and continues to do so even today. Formerly the empire of the Zamorins, the Calicut of today is an important domestic and international trade center.

Vasco da Gama arrived here in 1498, making the seaport the world’s gateway to Kerala.

The most recent title given to Calicut is the city of sculptures because of the several sculptures scattered around the city. The city with its rich past has now evolved into a thriving modern city with good connectivity and a bustling economy.

  • Calicut International Airport caters to Calicut and Malappuram’s flight needs and is the seventh busiest airport in India. It is 23 km away from Kozhikode town in Karipur and has flights to Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, UAE, and other important international and domestic destinations every day. The airport has the second-highest aircraft traffic out of 17 international airports in India.
  • Calicut Railway Station is well connected to major cities like Chennai, Mangalore, Bengaluru, and Calcutta. There are express trains to Mumbai and New Delhi and plenty of trains connecting the city within the state.
  • Calicut has a widespread network of national highways, state highways, district roads, and village roads. It is accessible by road from Bengaluru, Mangalore, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Waynad, and Coimbatore. NH-17, NH-121, and NH-213 are the main national highways here and SH-28, SH-29, SH-54, SH-68, and SH-34 are the state highways.

Calicut Civic Administration

  • The Kozhikode Corporation takes care of the civic administration for the 75 wards in the city, headed by a mayor. The wards are headed by councilors who are re-elected every five years.
  • The CalicutDevelopment Authority (CDA) was revived in 2012 to take care of urban development and infrastructure in the city.
  • Kozhikode district belongs to two parliamentary constituencies, Vadakara and Kozhikode, and 12 assembly constituencies. The district is made of 1 revenue division, 3 taluks, 12 blocks, 77 panchayats, and 117 villages. The corporation is divided into 39 survey wards to make revenue collection easier.
  • The Kozhikode City Police is divided into Kozhikode North and South to handle law and order, and administration. Kozhikode Rural Police takes care of the rural regions of the district. Beypore also has a coastal police station now.

Calicut Infrastructure

Calicut will become the first city in south India to get a monorail. Civic amenities and industrial infrastructure are also being improved by various organizations.

The Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) is responsible for many of the civic infrastructure improvements in Calicut and the whole state. The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) has two upcoming projects in Calicut, the KINFRA Marina Park and KINFRA Advanced Technology Park.

National Institute of Technology, Calicut; Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode; Indian Institute of Spices Research; and Western Ghats Field Research Station are just some of the reputed institutes in the region. The University of Calicut is the biggest university in the state and the second to be established in Kerala.

Calicut Real Estate Market

  • Around 2008, Calicut’s realty market experienced a sudden rise in construction activities. The Calicut IT Initiative was formed comprising citizens, institutions, builders, the chamber of commerce and government representatives to bring investment into the city.
  • The commercial realty market is also getting expensive with various developers and large companies moving in to the city. The Aditya Birla Group plans to build a satellite city near Calicut, in Mavoor. International companies are also setting up townships and IT centers here.
