Nestled in god’s own country, Calicut is the third-largest city in Kerala and a part of the second-largest urban agglomeration in the state. The port city spread along the Malabar Coast has often been called the city of spices for its crucial role as a trading point for eastern spices.
The city played a vital role in trade and commerce throughout history and continues to do so even today. Formerly the empire of the Zamorins, the Calicut of today is an important domestic and international trade center.
Vasco da Gama arrived here in 1498, making the seaport the world’s gateway to Kerala.
The most recent title given to Calicut is the city of sculptures because of the several sculptures scattered around the city. The city with its rich past has now evolved into a thriving modern city with good connectivity and a bustling economy.
