In the past five days, leaders from various fields, including hotels, hospitals, trades and business, have committed themselves to working towards reducing the quantity of waste generated and treating it in site after segregation. Bangalore is expecting to see a drop down by 1,500 tonnes in the quantity of garbage it generates everyday. The corporates are set to start a drive to cut down on garbage generation from 3,500 tonnes to 2,000 tonnes at the Wake Up Clean Up Bengaluru Fair at Freedom Park.
I heard that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has requested the government to direct all its departments to segregate and manage the waste generated in their offices. The government offices are generating the majority of waste in the city. The BBMP commissioner has requested the Chief Secretary to send orders to the head of all the departments on reducing, managing and segregating garbage
The government has allocated Rs 200 crores for solid waste management in this year’s budget. They will utilise the money in purchasing plots to set up waste processing units, dry waste collection centres and other activities related to solid waste management.
Shantinagar MLA said that he will identify a plot in his area which will be dedicated to waste segregation and bio-gas production. BBMP commissioner promised that all the wards will have Dry Waste Collection Centres (DWCC) in another 8-10 months and the officials are working towards setting up garbage treatment units. At present, 60 of the 198 wards in the city have DWCCs.
