The UCMC has set aside funds for the project in its budget for 2012-13. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 13.50 crore. A Mangalore-based agency has been given the responsibility of constructing the bridge and the work is expected to get completed in 18 months.The bridge will be 375 metre long and its width will be 4.25 metre. The height of bridge above the low tide level will be 7.50 metre. During the foundation ceremony, MLA said that the government has already released an amount of Rs 8 crore to UCMC and the rest of the amount will be released soon. The widening of Adi-Udupi-Maple road stretch is also on the priority list of the government.
Padukere is connected to Kaup via road. In case of emergency, people find it difficult to reach Udupi crossing the rivulet as it has high and low tides. Now the residents are using ferry services to reach Maple as there is no other way to communicate. It was former CM B S Yeddyurappa, who visited the place to inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations of Udupi City Municipal Corporation(UCMC), announced a special grant for the project to make the long-standing dream of island’s residents a reality.
The bridge is expected to benefit around 8,000 residents approximately 1,200 houses of Padukere to reach Udupi through a shorter route. At present, the residents are taking the route that goes through Mattu and Katapady to reach Udupi covering a distance of about 22 km. Once the bridge project gets completed, the distance between Padukere and Udupi will be just 5.50 km shorter by 16.50 km.
