Officials said that not many opt for such alternative as they are not so cost effective. If property buyers can spend lot on flooring and other items, they should also invest in renewable energy as a long term investment. It is always advisable to plan the construction of the house keeping in mind the installation of such systems.

A resident in Bangalore who has installed a hybrid unit of solar energy and wind energy at his apartment says that he is very comfortable using the energy generated from the solar panels and the windmills and hence he saves at least Rs 1000 a month in electricity bill.

According to Bescom, there are around 87,513 solar heaters used in Bangalore metropolitan area, each of which saves two kilowatt hour per unit. Bescom Deputy General manager said that they have made it mandatory for all the residential sites measuring 60 ft to 40 ft and above to have solar water heaters.

Bangalore is believed to have the highest percentage of solar water heaters in the country, which has reduced the electricity consumption to some extent. The demand for the solar water heaters is going up every year by 50 percent in the city.
