About Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is nicknamed ‘The Golden City’ and is a town in Rajasthan. It is located a little under 600 km from the state capital, Jaipur, and was once known as Jaisalmer State. The entire town is situated on a ridge made of yellowish sandstone crowned by a majestic fort. The fort contains the Jaisalmer palace and multiple Jain temples.

The town is located at the heart of Thar Desert, and is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer district. Many houses and temples in Jaisalmer have been sculpted by hand and exude a kind of beauty that’s unique to the place.

Stats And Facts

  • As per provisional data from the 2011 Indian census, Jaisalmer has a total population of 89,210 people. Over a decade, Jaisalmer’s total population (rural and urban) has grown by around 32.22%, the second-highest increase in the state of Rajasthan.
  • The sex ratio in Jaisalmer is at 799 females for every 1,000 males. The overall sex ratio has seen an increase, from 785 in the year 2001.
  • The share of population between the urban and rural areas of Jaisalmer is 84.97% and 15.03% respectively. Overall, the urban population has seen a decadal growth of a little under 2%, up from 13.28% in the year 2001.
  • Jaisalmer has a total land area of 5 square kilometres, and a land elevation of 751 feet above sea level.
  • The town is almost entirely covered in sand, as it is part of the Thar Desert. Some of the sand dunes in Jaisalmer rise to as high as 150 feet, and they are one of the recurring elements of the town’s aesthetics.
  • Oil India Limited discovered that there was natural gas in the Jaisalmer basin in the year 1988, after the government of India initiated departmental oil exploration in 1955-56 in Jaisalmer.

The Tourism Industry

  • Jaisalmer has a thriving tourism industry, because of its earthen charm and untouched historical landmarks. Most of its revenues are earned from the department of tourism.
  • The city earns significant foreign exchange from the large number of international tourists who throng to it. The main attractions in Jaisalmer are Jaisalmer Fort, the Folklore Museum, Desert Culture Centre and Museum, the Desert Festival, Gadsisar Lake, and the many different Havelis present here.
  • The Desert Festival is organised every year and has earned international acclaim. Other than a range of attractions, there are also various competitions organised during the festival.
  • Other key industries in Jaisalmer are stone-cutting and carving, the khadi industry and the minerals-based industry.

Connectivity

  • Jaisalmer Airport has good connectivity to other major cities. Jaisalmer currently also has a defence air base that is managed by the Indian Air Force.
  • Jaisalmer is connected to other parts of India by railways, by both broad as well as metre gauge rails. Delhi and Jodhpur have direct trains to Jaisalmer. Even the ‘Palace on Wheels’ luxury train stops at Jaisalmer.
  • Road connectivity to Jaisalmer is good, as it lies on National Highway 15 (NH-15). The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation runs regular buses to and from the city.
  • The primary modes of transport within the city are auto-rickshaws and bicycles.

Jaisalmer Civic Administration

  • The Jaisalmer Municipal Board handles all the municipal activities in the city, including infrastructure projects.
  • The Municipal Commissioner heads the Municipal Board.
  • There are 30 wards in total, within the Jaisalmer district, and ward-wise elections are held regularly.
  • The Jaisalmer police are a part of the government of Rajasthan and the Rajasthan Police.

Jaisalmer Infrastructure

Jaisalmer is still developing, and currently contributes to the state through its tourism revenue. It is expected to remain a tourist destination in the future as well, with clear expectations of an increase in infrastructure projects catering to the logistical requirements of converting Jaisalmer to a full-fledged tourist destination.

Jaisalmer is already on the radar of the Rajasthan infrastructure agenda of 2025. An initial screening report has already been created for the integrated tourism development of Jaisalmer. The focus of the project is to increase access to major tourism sites within the city, and creating new tourism products, while also improving the general urban infrastructure of the town.
