Kolar is a city located in the Kolar district of Karnataka. It’s the administrative headquarters of the district. It’s located just 70 km from Bangalore and 32 km from the Kolar Gold Fields, for which it’s most popular. Generally, Kolar is most prominently known for gold mining, and generally for silk and milk as well.
Historically, Kolar is an important city and was important source of gold. The Ganga dynasty, which reigned supreme from 350-550 CE, used Kolar as their capital city for twenty years. A sacred place from the early times, it was once called the Avantika-Kshetra. Till this day, Kolar remains famous for its religious establishments.

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited manages the efficient transmission of power to Kolar. The generation of power in the city, district, and the Karnataka state as a whole, keeps growing as well. Additionally, the country’s biggest solar power unit, at 3-MW capacity, is located in Yelasandra, Kolar.
The water table levels have been dropping in Kolar, but a number of measures are being planned to make amends. Some of these moves include check dams, contour bunding, and desalting. The Palar river basin in the region can also be used to improve the water table.
The health and education infrastructure in the city is also continuously improving. There are over 3,500 primary schools in the Kolar district, in addition to over 250 high schools and more than 70 pre-university colleges. With a good mix of government and private hospitals, and primary health centers, the city finds itself amidst strong medical infrastructure.
