Citizens celebrate India’s 64th Year of Independence with a Difference
For many, Independence is like a point in history. The words ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty’ need to be revisited. The constitution provides us with a rule of law and an ideal that we need to strive to achieve our goals. It’s not only saluting the national flag and giving speeches but also taking the Constitution’s ideals forward.
Andheri residents have chosen the day to plant trees. “We will also create a tree bank. By next year, saplings will be planted along the roads,” said Biju Augustine, member of Military Road Welfare Residents’ Association. Citizens are celebrating India’s 64th year of Independence with a difference.
NGOs, which work in slums areas like Dharavi, are arranging open-to-all meetings where people are taught to relate to the constitution. We the people, an NGO, will organise one such programme called ‘Freedom under construction’. We ask people from the slums to share their success stories. These stories will motivate people towards that and eventually help in nation building and community building,”said Vineeta Singh, founder of We the People.
Tarun Mitra Mandal is organising lectures in support of the Lokpal Bill. “We will have a lecture on the day Anna Hazare begins his fast,” said Rajendra Dharod of the Mandal. Khar Residents’ Association will felicitate children who have topped. “If children are told what to do for the country, they will get involved in its affairs from a younger age,” Anandini Thakoor, member of the association.
