Widely known to be a perfect mix of residential and commercial area, Perambur belongs to the northern part of the city of Chennai. The origin of the name is unknown, and a few hundred years ago, this place used to be a bamboo forest. Perambu in Tamil means bamboo and oor means a town or a place. This street also has a busy grocery market. This locality also has a number of popular food chains like KFC, Café Coffee Day, and Domino’s Pizza. Apart from these, various schools, hospitals, entertainment venues, and religious places are also found in this region.
Due to the early British settlements in and around Perambur, this place has the largest population of Anglo-Indians in the whole of South India. Other than Anglo-Indians, this place also has a large number of Malayalees. Connectivity and Transit Points
Perambur’s connectivity is one of its major advantages. Having the fifth largest railway station in Chennai, this place is well connected to Perambur Railway Station, Perambur Loco Works, and Perambur Carriage Works railway stations. The newly constructed flyover, which was opened in March 2010, connects Perambur railway station and Perambur Carriage Works, and it greatly serves in reducing the traffic in North Chennai. This bridge is 13 metres high and 1.3 km in length, making it the tallest bridge in Chennai after Kathipara. The bridge is segregated into three levels, with the lower and upper level for road transport and middle level for rail transport.
Although the place is known for its railway connectivity, it is also well connected with buses. It has a major bus terminal in the vicinity of Perambur railway station and numerous bus stops are found all over the town. It is also easy to avail auto rickshaws and call taxis upon one’s needs.
