Yamunanagar is a municipal city located in the state of Haryana. It is also the headquarters of the larger Yamunanagar district. The famous Yamuna River forms the eastern border of this district, and of the state of Haryana. The river runs downwards providing the eastern border for the cities Karnal and Panipat as well, and eventually enters New Delhi. New Delhi is approximately 200 km south of Yamunanagar.
Yamunanagar’s history is a short one. Following the partition of India in 1947, Punjabi ethnic groups that found themselves in Pakistani territory relocated to Yamunanagar. These early settlers realized the agriculture potential of the land, and farmed poplar trees for timber trade. This jump-started the industries and attracted immigrants to relocate here, giving Yamunanagar a diverse cultural environment.
Immigrants added to the growth of the industries, and gave rise to more trading and work opportunities. In turn, this attracted more immigrants to relocate here. This cycle continues even today. Yamunanagar currently stands as the second-highest revenue generator in Haryana, after Faridabad. The constantly growing industries and population has made real estate development a common interest. Yamunanagar’s geographical boundaries continue to expand.
