5 Tips for Making Your Home Monsoon Ready

Monsoons are here and our surroundings are full of lush greenery and our once-in-a-while indulgence of walking in the rains is much loved. But amidst these small wonders it’s also gloomy all around with the sun playing spoilsport most of the time. There’s a rise in water borne diseases not to mention the growth of algae and fungus, all adding to the cause of various illnesses. Our homes also suffer considerably due to the monsoons as there are leaking roofs, damp cupboards, damp smelling rooms and clothes, wet patches on the walls and wooden furniture and doors expanding resulting in a lot of damage.

Well, we suffer from these issues as most of us are unaware of how to take care of our homes and furniture during the monsoons. So here are some really easy tips which would help you sail through the monsoons.

  1. A pre-monsoon examination: It is much required as that’s the best time to look for possible leakages etc. Make sure that the cracks and roofs which might leak during the monsoons must be fixed with the help of professionals. This will ensure proper repair and monsoons would be spent enjoying the rains and not running after leaking roofs and cracked walls. However, just in case there’s still some leakage then you can easily get the cracks filled with white cement while the pores can be filled with wall putty. Also it’s always advisable to give your homes a fresh coat of paint before the monsoons as that would help in covering up hairline cracks and thus algae, fungus and weed won’t be able to grow.
  2. Care for your wooden furniture: Never polish your wooden furniture during monsoons as the moisture won’t let the varnish dry and would only cause damage to them. Instead it should always be done before or after the monsoons. During monsoons the furniture can be kept dry by being wiped everyday so that it does not soak in the moisture. You would have also noticed that wooden doors refuse to shut during monsoons. Well, it’s because they expand during the monsoon. So try and get these doors beaten to shape once in a while during the rainy season.
  3. Damp Cupboards: The next problem area are our cupboards which would have a damp smell throughout monsoon and so will our clothes. Put naphthalene balls, camphor or neem leaves and keep your cupboards fresh and dry.
  4. Ventilation: If you want to stay away from diseases then keep your homes thoroughly ventilated. Passage of fresh air would help to reduce dampness and thus you or your family won’t suffer from viral fever and other ailments like allergic reactions, asthma etc. Also, most of us put wet or damp clothes to dry inside our homes due to the rains. In such cases do switch on the fan so that clothes dry up fast, as not doing so can also lead to damp homes.
  5. Electric wires: One of the major danger zones in our homes. Electric wires do tend to get damp due to the dampness around and thus can cause short circuits and poses as a serious risk. Get all the wiring in your homes checked before/during the monsoons and enjoy a safe and happy monsoon.

So folks, do be safe and keep these tips in mind and enjoy a delightful monsoon. Oh, lastly, do replace the heavy summer curtains with lacy light coloured ones, bright carpets along with colourful bedsheets and floral cushions and have the best monsoons.
