Swimming Safety

Accidents by drowning in the swimming pools of apartment complexes is quiet a common occurrences. In fact it was just last week that we reported about a four year child drowning while cycling around the swimming pool of his complex. Swimming pools are a necessity in such high rises as in people’s busy schedules looking for a separate swimming pool outside one’s housing society is simply impossible. So builders make sure that a swimming pool is any which way a part of their plan. However, unfortunately in a bid to meet such rising demands the builders don’t follow the safety norms that must be maintained while building the swimming pools. On the other hand residents are not aware of these rules and they even don’t pay much attention to safety measures that needs to be taken while residents (adults and children alike) are using the pool.

Points that builders should keep in mind:

  • There should be two swimming pools (if possible) one for smaller kids (between 3years to 12years) and the other one for adults.
  • If there’s just one then the minimum depth should not be more than 2.5 feet to 3 feet.
  • Also the swimming pools which have some design for example where there’s a part jutting in to give it a different shape either than a square/rectangle must be avoided. As people while swimming would not know which part is jutting in and might hit their head if they miscalculate.
  • Swimming pools must never be in a general hangout area like near food stalls or other refreshment joints etc.
  • No Objection Certificates must be obtained from the Municipal bodies before building swimming pools and residents must also make sure that the plan and safety measures are scrutinized by the municipal bodies.

Safety measures to be taken by residents:

  • There should be trainers or lifeguards around and for them to keep a strict vigil there should be fixed pool timings.
  • If lifeguards or trainers cannot be afforded then a security personal must be present at all times.
  • Also stereo speakers etc. should not be allowed near the pool and children or adults must not be allowed to play or loiter near the pool.
  • Lifesaving equipment such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit should also be kept handy around the pools.
  • Swimming pools must always have crystal clear water at all times so that the suction ducts which can be found at the depths of the pools or sides can be seen and people don’t get stuck in there.
  • Wheel chairs, perambulators, children/adults using skates, or riding cycles must not be allowed to go near the swimming pools.
  • Also swim toys/ tubs or balls that are used while swimming must be checked carefully before each use
  • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty to avoid cramps of the stomach. Also one must warm up well before jumping into the pool.
  • Diving must never be practiced on the side with the minimum depth.
  • Lastly do put up posters of swimming pool safety measures around the pool so that each and every resident is aware and can take good care of themselves and the children in and around the swimming pool.

Life is precious and if these safety measures are in place life won’t be lost to such mindless tragedies. Be vigilant, be safe and don’t fear to take that splash!
