Overview :
Karjat situated in the east of Mumbai is a city, a sub-district, a tehsil in the Raigad district. It is situated on a mountainous region of Konkan Coast that spans over the Bhor Ghat, Sahyadris and Western Ghats in the Indian peninsular region. It also includes the coastal plains of the Konkan Region near Deccan and lies on the banks of the Ulhas river. Wavarle, Posari, Vadap, Vengaon, Morbe, Newali, Khandpe, Umroli are its neighboring localities. Karjat has traditionally been viewed as a holiday home destination, due to its natural beauty. It is situated at a distance of 62.3 km from Mumbai and 107 km from Pune via Mumbai-Pune Highway and NH48. Ulhas River which is passing from the middle of the locality. Over the last few years, the Karjat-Neral belt has transformed from a second home location, to a first-home destination.
Connectivity :
It is located 62.3 kms from Mumbai, 68.5 kms from Thane and 41.2 km from Navi Mumbai. It is also connected to Mumbai’s railway network. Karjat and Palashari are the two nearby railway stations here. However, Karjat Railway Station, being the major rail terminus located at a driving distance of 2 km only enjoys great connectivity via local trains to CST Mumbai, Panvel and Khopoli.
Upcoming Infra development :
Firstly, the area has been given minimal FSI of 1.0. A recreation centre is also proposed to be developed in the area, along with a 20-20 league playground and a golf course.
The Neral-Bhimashankar highway, which was recently approved by the government, will enormously boost connectivity to the commercial and industrial pockets of the region.
Also, the Karjat-Murbad Road is now a four-lane highway and part of the Virar-Murbad-Karjat-Khopoli-Alibaug Outer Ring Road.
Infrastructure is expected to improve, with the clearance for the Navi Mumbai Airport, expansion of JNPT and the proposed Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link.
Factors for future growth :
The government’s planned infrastructure, which covers all four modes of transport like rail networks, state highways, the upcoming airport and water transport facilities will surely boost connectivity and improve the standard of living in Karjat.
Sea over bridge and Trans Harbor Link between Sewri, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai is projected to cut the distance between the cities and make connectivity to Karjat even better.

Owing to the large inflow of tourists, the hospitality sector here is flourishing. Some of the popular places of Karjat include – Ulhas Valley, Bhor Ghat, Kondana caves, Peth Fort etc.
Luxury resorts and hotels are available in plenty. In addition, ample entertainment and leisure options such as recreation centres, restaurants and clubs. Tejas Carpet, Kasturi Arcade, KAC Enterprises, LifeStyle, Shinath General Store, Ghumare Time Junction are located nearby Karjat.
