Dug-up roads cause inconvenience in Mumbai

There are numerous trenches lying open across the city indicating a grim situation for the BMC before the rains set in moreover with barely seven days left to the official deadline to complete all road works.

One out of every 5km of carriageways was dug up. And, the BMC doesn’t have exact data of how much has been closed. In a city with a 1,900km road network, the civic body said it had given permission to dig around 380km of roads for repair or for underground utilities.

For the four months of monsoon may 20 is the civic body’s own deadline to complete all road works or suspend unfinished work after bringing them to a safe stage.

Some officials admitted that apart from the trenches, there are over 300 roads that are at various stages of repair. It will be a race against time for the BMC.

Additional municipal commissioner said “, we alerted the local ward officers to ensure these works are completed before the deadline. There are a few areas where trenches need to be closed.

Civic officials claimed that roughly, 80% of the trenches have been filled and the rest would be taken care of by the end of the week.But citizens are not convinced.

Nikhil Desai, a resident of Matunga complained ” The road next to the footpath has been taken up for concretization, there is absolutely no way to walk. The footpath outside Sion police station has been dug up by multiple agencies and work is still going on.”

Rs 50 crore for filling of potholes this year and shortlisted one contractor for each of the seven zones budgetted by the BMC.

Similar was the grouse of residents in several areas in Parel, Andheri, Worli and Dahisar, where trenches are lying unattended.
