In Budget 2014-15, presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday, an outlay of Rs 37,880 crore has been proposed to be sanctioned for building 8,500 km of National Highways and roads in the country during the ongoing fiscal year.
Proposing to sanction the mentioned outlay, Jaitley said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will use the amount for building national as well as state roads. The Minister further added that, out of the total of Rs 37,880 crore, an amount of Rs 3,000 crore has been earmarked for building roads in the country’s north-eastern region.
According to the detailed shared by Jaitley, 8,500 km of new roads will be constructed by the NHAI in fiscal year 2014-15. In addition, construction work will also be commenced on certain Expressways parallel to the development of Industrial Corridors, the work of which will be overseen by a new authority – the National Industrial Corridor Authority – headquartered in Pune.
Jaitley also said that work will also be started on roads that will inter-link 100 new ‘smart’ cities, which mark one of the key infrastructure- and realty-related proposals in the budget.
Noting that “roads sector constitutes a very import artery of communication in the country,” Jaitley said: “The sector again needs huge amount of investment along with debottlenecking from maze of clearances.”
