Q: Protection of columns and beams in apartments :I understand that it it not allowed to drill holes or make alterations in columns that are load bearing. Please confirm the same and the norms relating to the same.As the Secretary of the Association, I told a member that he was not allowed to drill in the columns and attach protective chains to his car park area. Am I violating his right ? Can i insist that he can do the same by installing two pipes on either side and fixing the chain on these pipes instead of damaging the columns which carry the load of the entire building at the ground floor level?Could any member or professional civil engineer help me with norms in this regard? Load bearing columns at ground floor lever, carparking. Drilling of holes to install chains to protect car park.
My comments to replies
Hi Raman, I do not think this is related to any safety issue because drilling of holes to install chains is not a big construction. The owner is much concerned about his car. The association should also take care of the members of the apartment.
My concern is that if all the residents start drilling on the columns it could be a mess. Also the alternative of installing two pipes on either side and mounting the chain on the pipes is much better and cheaper too.
