Residents of Chandigarh have to pay housing tax

The councilors of the Chandigarh civic body have opposed the imposing of housing tax for the properties in Chandigarh.

But the UT administration wants the initiation of housing tax in the municipalities.

In a meeting with the UT and the municipal corporations, it is made clear that the city may lose the grants of Rs. 400 crore from the central government under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The councilors across party lines informed that there were sufficient source of funds with the civic body, and the initiation of housing tax is not essential for them.
