Properties in Nagpur will be assessed for correct property tax
The Nagpur Municipality has decided to fast track the assessment work of properties in Nagpur. The work is pending for many years and this delay is causing a huge loss to the NMC.
According to the Municipality there are 5.5 lakh properties in the city. It is necessary to reevaluate the properties in every five years. Though the process started twice in 1998 and in 2008, the revaluation of only 25-30% of properties was done in 2008.
As all the properties are not reevaluated, citizens whose properties were reevaluated are paying higher tax while others pay very low tax. So to overcome the situation, the municipality has planned to complete the task in six months.
Due to inadequate staffing many files are pending for assessment. It is estimated that over 70,000 new properties waiting for assessment.
The municipality is also planning to computerize the property tax department for faster execution of the project.
