Civic life in Bangalore is troubled by rainy season
Though the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) claims that they are prepared for the rainy season, the civic life of the city is always troubled during the monsoon. Every time it rains, the low-lying areas are flooded.
The experts of civic issues have said that this happens as most of the primary and secondary storm-water drains in the city are filled with silts.
BBMP has accepted that there are 70 low lying areas in Bangalore and they also confirmed that BBMP has already started the cleaning operation of the drains in the city for smooth flow of rainwater.
Last year in June 2011, BBMP has planned to start the secondary drainage cleaning process. But the process is on a hold as the approval process is delayed and the tender process is still on.
Last year, the BBMP had consulted the government with regard to framing a policy to create work fronts for the drains. However, there has been no progress.
With limited options available to prevent flooding, the BBMP is stressing on rejuvenation of lakes, pressuring citizens to adopt rainwater harvesting, besides taking up tree planting to prevent the flooding of roads during monsoon.
