Mumbai citizens come out to save open spaces
Mumbai citizens have organised two different meetings in a bid to save open spaces and demand action against illegal encroachments.
70 people from all over the city attended a meeting in Juhu to save open spaces, while several organisations working in and around Bandra held a citizens’ march from the Apostolic Carmel Convent to the BMC office on Hill Road, Bandra (W) to protest against illegal encroachment and hawkers.
The citizens demanded to be involved with the civic authorities while drawing up of the new Development Plan (DP). Citizens also want to have a say in decisions on changing of reservation of an open space and apart from playgrounds also want wetlands, mangroves and salt pans to be protected.
DP is the public land use plan that the BMC is expected to implement over two decades by acquiring land from private owners and developing it for the intended purpose. Citizens across the city have urged to have a say in this blue print for public amenities.
