1 Comment Sub Category:Ahmedabad,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Nov 26, 2012

The civic body in association with NGO’s is planning to involve rag-pickers in waste management and cleanliness drive.

Around 6000 ragpickers have been identified by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). They believe that the project would take care of garbage dumps on the city roads as well as the increasing number of rag-pickers.

AMC commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said that Pune has done best in city’s waste management by using rag-pickers and the similar system will be adopted by Ahmedabad also.

To identify or recognise rag-pickers employed in this project, they will be provided identity cards and uniforms by the company. They will immediately collect garbage from houses.

Rag-pickers will be free to sell the waste after segregation of the waste collected and the remaining waste will be dumped by the corporation. Regarding the payment of the rag-pickers, every residence will need to shell out Rs 1 every day for this service directly to them.
