Industrial waste threatens Tarapur
Mumbai- The High Court has observed that about 20 liters of industrial waste is being set free daily without any treatment.
The HC aimed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in order to crackdown the polluting of industrial units.
On November 20, 2012 a new division with Chief Justice Mohit Shah and also Justice Nitin Jamdar witnessed a public interest litigation through activist Nicholas Almeida expressing Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in numerous industries are not necessarily adopting the statutory norms. Observing MPCB’s affidavit which reported affidavit about effluents getting discharged in five CETPs in Thane, Ratnagiri along with Solapur zones.
Counsel for Tarapur Environment Protection Society (TEPS), which runs a CETP in MIDC Tarapur Boisar area, Thane said the court that there are some 1176 industries in Tarapur Boisar area. It stated that TEPS is not able to offer any particulars about the polluting industries because first the individual industries are not allowing to collect samples of the industrial waste and secondly MPCB is not sharing data about those industries.
The society transferred an application to HC trying to find other guidelines that the MPCB act contrary to the defaulting market sectors. The high court judges mentioned clearly that unless and until MPCB and MIDC extend essential assistance to TEPS, it is not possible for the latter to run the CETP. The HC ordered MPCB and MIDC to take necessary steps about the alarming situation and also share information with TEPS.
MPCB and MIDC shall inform each of the individual industrial unit in Tarapur to allow TEPS to take samples of industrial discharged waste. If any industrial unit do not cooperate then the TEPS has the liberty to stop receiving waste from that unit into CETP and disconnect the outlet pipeline of that unit.
MIDC should likewise tell industrial unit in Tarapur that disappointment on their component grant required cooperation to be able to TEPS pertaining to collecting biological samples, it will be dealt with disrespect of court in addition to HC will take actions against the all of them for violating directions given to them.
