No Comments Sub Category:Chennai,Infrastructure Posted On: Feb 15, 2013

subwayChennai-  After a wait of five years, the residents of Old Washermenpet and Royapuram is to get a vehicular subway on Monegar Choultry Road near Stanley Medical College all complete. The subway construction began in March 2008 and is expected to complete by the next month.

According to an official, about 80 percent of the subway construction has been completed which includes the construction of storm water drains, service lane construction and concrete riding surface. The only work left to do is the electrification which includes installing street lamps and painting.

The subway which is a two-way lane measures about 359 meters long and eight meters wide. This project work is  jointly executed by the Chennai Corporation and the railways which has already missed several deadlines.

The project started of with a deadline of April 2011, which was not met causing a delay in the completion of work. The estimated cost of the project has increased up to Rs.15.75 crore which was Rs. 9.25 crore in 2006.

The key reason for the delay in the project was due to the slow progress of the work execution from the railways who began their work only in 2010 followed by an impact from the monsoon season resulting in work suspension.

With the subway being built, the motorists can commute through the Broadway without having to travel on any long routes through Mint junction and Royapuram Railway over bridge.

However, the students, workers and other commuters have been visiting Stanley hospital on MC road through the uncompleted subway without knowing the dangers involved while crossing the tracks.

As per a Royapuram resident, the completion and the opening of the subway will ease the Old Washermenpet and Royapuram resident’s commuting as the motorists will not have to take the mint junction where a flyover work is in progress.
