Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) after considering the successful implementation of turning Sabarmati riverfront into a picnic spot, has now took a signal from the project and submitted a proposal to beautify and build up the Amanishah Nullah on similar grounds after making it encroachment free.

Though in a recent meeting, with the change in guards the project witnessed strong criticism. As the geographical conditions are poles apart, the new Jaipur Development Commissioner (JDC) is not convinced with the idea to develop the nullah. Also, the nullah does not contain fresh water to motivate people to visit the spot, alleged by a senior official source.

Officials said dislike has been expressed; the project has not been completely shelved. “The appointed firm Wepcos has recently submitted its interim report followed by which an interim report will be prepared. A final detail project report (DPR) will be drafted after receiving a nod,” added sources.

From various departments the firm has sought observation such as JMC, RHB to prepare the interim report, but none have showed any interest.

It will be complicated for JDA to control encroachments in nonexistence of any plan, said by an official.

SPAN, the appointed consultant company, had submitted a report to conserve the nullah in 2010. Though, due to lack of funds, it was shelved. The authorities are not able to construct ‘kuccha’ or ‘pucca’ boundaries for the nullah, due to the situation being same.

Approximately Rs 410 crore will be required to conserve the nullah and to construct boundary walls and metal fencing, as estimated by the SPAN report. But due to lack of funds the work is not taken up, said the official. He added while it is still not possible for JDA to conserve the nullah, a proposal will be sending to the state government seeking funds.

The consultant company in its report had projected to construct 11.5 km pucca wall from Raval Ji dam to Gujjar ki Thadi, to make the 42-km-long nullah encroachment free.

The official further added, “Calculating the velocity of water at a maximum of five metre per second, construction of a 25-metre-wide and 1.5 metre concrete wall is proposed in the 11.5 km stretch. In the remaining part of the nullah, fencing was proposed.”The company also projected to construct a 42-km-long maintenance road on either side of the Nullah to plant trees that will help prevent encroachment.
