Greater Cochin Development Authority to discuss with PWD
Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will discuss with public works department (PWD) to get the possession of Old Mattancherry Bridge. Earlier discussions with PWD did not result in any conclusion. GCDA plans to undertake the restoration work and then open it for public, if given possession.
The bridge was built in 1940 and is one of the major landmarks that link the city to its past. The centre of the bridge is made of wood and steel and can be raised to let ships pass below it. Venugopal informs that the maintenance works are not carried out on a regular basis. As a result, the wooden planks in the middle of the bridge have gotten completely damaged, necessitating immediate repair or replacement. The bridge is not yet 100 years old and thus cannot be recognised as a heritage monument.
