Chief minister Sheila Dikshit said an earthquake can cause unprecedented damage to Delhi and hence it was essential to concentrate on preparedness. Delhi has densely populated areas with a large number of unsafe buildings. A sizeable number of unauthorized colonies and urban slums compound vulnerability in the city.

“There is a need to ensure strict enforcement of the building bylaws considering that the city is extremely vulnerable to various natural disasters,” she said, addressing a seminar on the media’s role in disaster management.

Dikshit said apart from natural disasters the city also faced the threat of terror strikes. Urging the media to help in bringing awareness about the precautions needed during any disaster, Dikshit said Delhi is in seismic zone-IV which is considered prone to earthquakes.
