Eco- Friendly Construction- Need of the nation
The present data shows that nearly 30 % of India’s population lives in urban areas, that population is estimated to increase to 50 % in the next 15 years. Sustainable architecture needs to be in place to accommodate this surge in urban population. This means there will be more depletion of renewable resources and if measures are not taken to convert the cities into green cities, then the future is truly bleak.
A growing urban population with its changing lifestyles is straining the supply of natural resources. Finding appropriate sustainable urban, industrial and rural models for the Indian subcontinent is the need of the hour. We cannot ape the west and import the measures from the industrialised nations or depend completely on globalisation; we need to develop our own mechanisms which are suitable for our lifestyles — sustainable, socially and culturally engaged.
In the past when the cities were designed, the provision for rain water harvesting, using solar, wind or other renewable source of energy, waste management, waste water treatment etc. were not considered. However in the future the master plans for the cities must be the master plans for the environment, with all the material requirements as a subset of the larger environmental vision.
Architects, designers and urban planners need to engage together in designing such eco-friendly cities and safeguard the future generations. The country is clearly witnessing a paradigm shift —technology has positively affected our lives and a well-planned, technologically-designed space is now well within our hands. Hence, design flexibility that allows sustainability as per client’s requirements is hugely popular with consumers and these green structures are the future of the construction industry in India.
