Union Health Ministry urges State Government to identify land for AIIMS
A letter was written to the State Government by the Union Health Ministry stating that about 150-200 acres of land should be identified so that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences can be constructed. According to reliable sources, the letter was sent to the Centre quite recently.
One of the department officials have also mentioned that Chennai might be the first place where AIMS shall be constructed. However, it may be difficult to find a proper location. There are quite a number of care centres in the city at the moment. Some of them include a special hospital located at the Omandurar Estate, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the Stanley and Kilapauk Medical College Hospitals.
The health infrastructure saw quite a lot of progress when Mr. Anbumani Ramadoss was the Union Health Minister. There were quite a number of government hospitals constructed in Salem and Madurai launched by the UPA government under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakshya Yojana.
Other government hospitals such as Tiruchi Government Hospital was upgraded as well. The funds were given by the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakshya Yojana. There were announcements made by the government in 2013 that the Coimbatore Medical College shall be upgraded. Thanjavur and Tirunelveli have been added to this too.
