MoEF and UP govt to decide eco-sensitive area around Okhla Bird sanctuary
The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the UP government will together decide the outline of the eco-sensitive area around the Okhla Bird Sanctuary.
The impending decision of the MoEF and the UP government with regard to outlining the 10km eco-sensitive zone in the periphery of the Okhla Bird Sanctuary will have an impact on thousands of flat owners in the region. Unidentified sources have revealed that the MoEF and UP government is likely to reach a decision on the matter as early as next week.
With the decision marking a tough balancing act for the authorities to protect the environment while also safeguarding the interest of the flat owners, AK Shukla – Chief, conservation of forests – said: “Our objective is to see that the quality of the bird sanctuary improves.”
Further adding that marking an eco-sensitive zone of 10 km around the Okhla Bird Sanctuary is “impractical” as the sanctuary it is not a real sanctuary but a wetland, Shukla said: “We take cognizance of the fact.”
Shukla also asserted that the UP government will have to accept and implement the decision taken by the MoEF, and said that the authorities’ decision will largely be based on the fact that “allowing highrises or highly polluting structures in close vicinity of any area of ecological sensitivity will need prevention.”
