With ‘safety’ being one of the major concerns for the Indian Railways, the latest Rail Budget 2014-15 has enlisted some technological solutions for dealing with the issue.

The safety-related technological solutions put forth in the latest rail Budget were recently announced by Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda.

Acknowledging the fact that “safety of passengers is of paramount importance for Indian Railways,” Gowda said that an estimated expenditure of more than Rs 40,000 crore will have to be undertaken to cater to track renewals, removal of unmanned level crossings, as well as building road-under-bridges and road-over-bridges.

In addition, Gowda also said that the use of ultrasonic flaw-detecting systems has been proposed by the Railways, for the detection of rail and weld fractures.

As per the details shared by Gowda, ‘ultrasonic broken rail detection system’ will be tested at two locations as pilot projects. The successful testing of the ultrasonic systems will pave the way for a wider implementation of the systems across the country.

Since the ultrasonic systems make use of sound waves to create vibrations, which subsequently send signals to receivers to give an alert about potential safety threats, like disjointed rail lines, the implementation of ultrasonic systems for flaw-detection can help prevent the derailing of trains.
