The government of Tamil Nadu has recently proposed a number of residential projects which include layouts, apartments and some slum development initiatives which will help in improving the supply of houses for people with lower and middle incomes.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha in a recent statement in the Assembly stated that modern facilitated residential layouts of around 222 acres will be built at a village named kadambur near Maraimalai Nagar. Maramalai Nagar is located 35 km south from the city of Chennai. She further announced that residential plots will be made available for all income groups.

The government under the slum free cities programme proposed the building of 10,000 apartments by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board situated in Chennai and other cities. The estimated cost is expected around Rs 825 crore.

The Central Government stated that the government will provide around 50 percent of the project cost, the State will provide 40 percent and the beneficiaries will provide 10 percent. The apartments will be designed in 400 sq ft along with amenities like fans and lights. The Slum Clearance Board’s project that was built in Nochikuppam with 534 apartments in the year 1972 is stated for a redevelopment because of the dilapidated condition.
