Indira Awaas Yojana taking shape
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi vision of housing with water, electricity and toilets for all the Indians over the next eight years is taking shape. The rural development ministry is revamping the rural housing scheme and is drawing a road map to implement it in “mission mode”. This is in sync with Modi’s dream of housing for all by 2022.
The key changes proposed in the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) include doubling the per unit cost to about Rs 150,000. The proposal also talks about enhancing the area of each unit to 30 square meters and making the construction of toilets part of the scheme. The scheme also wants to look at providing for mandatory convergence of water and power supply to rural households.
The government official who is aware of the advancements mentioned that as of now, the government has given a grant of Rs 70,000 for construction of a new house of 20 square meter size in plain areas. This amount is raised to Rs 75,000 for hilly and difficult areas.
However, construction of toilets and provision for water and electricity is considered optional however the NaMo government’s dream is to provide housing with the basic amenities. The official also stated that since these areas fall in the domain of different ministries, convergence barely happens as a result of which most of the rural households are deprived of basic facilities of sanitation, drinking water and electricity.
