On Thursday the Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu announced that The guidelines for the Government’s flagship scheme ‘100 smart cities‘ are in advanced stage of finalisation.

Most of the state capitals will be included in this flagship program. All the states were directed to finalise a list of cities in their respective states which could be converted into smart cities. Most of the twin cities which have the access to the facilities of the nearby main city were chosen for this program. These smart cities will be self-sustained cities with state of the art infrastructure and transportation system. Eco friendly measures will be taken in these cities to conserve fast depleting natural resources. Human interference will be minimal and high end technology will be used to ensure safety of the citizens.

Naidu was addressing the media at a ‘Meet the Press’ programme at the Press Club in New Delhi. He explained that a meeting of State ministers has been called on September 12 to hold due consultations.

Naidu also mentioned that foreign governments have also sent notes on this expressing interest. Dubai, Singapore, Japan and Russia are a few of those nations and cities which want to assist India in this smart city program. Naidu stated that his ministry is studying them and will come out with a policy soon.
