Metro Rail Finishes Work on Its First Tunnel in Chennai
The Chennai Metro rail project accomplished one of its significant landmarks as it managed to complete work on the underground tunnel on the Shenoy Nagar-Thirumangalam stretch. The 2.797km long, was completed a couple of days ago while work is on for completing a second parallel tunnel for the project. The significance of the underground tunnel is that it is going to act as a lifeline for Anna Nagar residents once the Chennai Metro rail project is completed and commissioned. Residents of Anna Nagar will be able to use metro rail to reach Koyambedu, Alandur and St Thomas Mount when the Shenoy Nagar-Tirumangalam stretch is commissioned.
The underground tunnel has been completed within the stipulated timeline making it one the engineering marvels accomplished by the Chennai Metro Team. Metro rail officials have meanwhile said that with the completion of the underground tunnel on the Shenoy Nagar-Thirumangalam stretch, they are hopeful that all pending underground sections would be completed on time. The Chennai Metro team has so far managed to complete more than 60% of the tunneling work, which adds up to 36.308km, has been completed.
According to Chennai Metro official press release, the roof, concourse level and base of the underground station have been completed at Thirumangalam station while roof and concourse slabs are being built at Shenoy Nagar. Work is meanwhile on for creating of Metro stations in four landmarks including Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar East, Anna Nagar Tower and Thirumangalam.
The four underground stations of Chennai Metro meant detailed planning and immaculate ground work since most of the underground stations are located in the middle of busy neighborhoods. Construction of underground stations is a time consuming and tedious process per se but the Chennai Metro team seems to have accomplished its task without much fuss.
Reports say that, upon completion, the Chennai metro will be the first in the country to integrate other public transport systems, expecting 75% reduction in commuting time from one end of the city to the other.
