Vanchiyoor-Uppidamoodu Road to get 6.1 crore Makeover
The 300-metre stretch of road from Vanchiyoor to Uppidamoodu in Thiruvananthapuram Kerala will be getting a costly makeover and construction works are to be carried out by the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd.
Road Makeover Plans:
The costly makeover which will be done to the 300 metre stretch of Vanchiyoor- Uppidamoodu road will include
- Widening of the road giving it an extra 7-metre corridor
- Covering the portion of canal by placing pre-fabricated boxes’
Long Term Plans:
The proposal for widening the stretch of road had been filed at court almost eight years ago. The project got delayed for a number of reasons including the issue of requiring to cut down as many as 54 trees necessary for the road widening.
The discussion lasted for years until finally the Tree Protection Committee agreed on allowing the felling of 18 trees only.
Road Make-over Plans:
- According to the proposed plan, there shall be a 7-metre wide corridor on either side of the median.
- The median shall have a varying width of 1 – 2.5 metres which will enable accommodation of the trees that the Tree Protecting Committee has not allowed to be felled.
- A 2 metre wide footpath will be running along either sides of the road.
- Director of TRDCL, Anil Kumar Pandala who is heading the said project gave an estimate for the project to be worth Rs. 6.1 crore approximately. He also added that around 1.1 crore from the project could have been saved had it not involved the work of saving the trees.
- Pandala stated that the water from the canal will be diverted using pumps and both ends will have grating that will prevent blockage inside the canal.
- Casting work for a couple of C-shaped boxes has begun which will be covering the 1-metre portion in the canal at its year at Akkulam. The boxes will be brought to Vanchiyoor via trucks. Around 43 C-shaped boxes have been completed which will be able to cover 10% of the proposed area. A total of 600 boxes are required for entire coverage.
- The canal to be filled will have a ground layering done with red earth after which the boxes shall be placed and then made intact using a 15 cm thick concrete layer.
