BMTC will pioneer the use of common mobility card
The state transport department is planning to introduce common mobility cards on city buses. The state plans to launch the card soon in 1,000 buses and extend it to the Metro service too. These cards can be used for buying travel tickets and paying parking fees at bus terminals or parking areas governed by the transport department.
The card system that was being introduced in the state had already drawn the Centre’s attention and the latter was planning to extend the cards across the country after monitoring its success. If the common mobility card extended across the country, the Card would allow cashless travel anywhere in the country.
The Union government has chosen Bangalore for this pilot project under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission scheme. It will be implemented at a cost of Rs 16 crore. The Centre will fund 35% of the project and the rest will be taken care of by the state. To enable easy recharge of the cards, the department is also planning to set up 100 recharge centres.
