DDA goes chic, new flats to be modern and green

No Comments Sub Category:Delhi-NCR Posted On: Feb 25, 2014

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is planning to undertake a complete makeover of its flats, adopting snazzy, contemporary designs for its latest batch of energy-efficient ‘green’ flats which are to come up in the next two years.

With this, the authority would be doing away with its 50-year-old practice of enforcing the same bare-minimum, uniform design for all its residential projects. With the change in design, the DDA plans to address frequent complaints by consumers of lack of space, poor design and bad quality of construction in its flats. The affordability and superior location of DDA flats, however, make them popular with the Delhiites.

Balvinder Kumar, Vice-chairman of DDA says, “We don’t want to continue with the old designs. For years, the DDA has been using standard, uniform designing, which will not happen anymore.” He further added, “All our new projects, both residential and commercial, would also be energy efficient green buildings.”

The DDA, which employs a small army of architects, designers and engineers, is also now contemplating to take the help of private architects to come up with the best possible design. Speaking on this, Kumar said, “Each housing project will be treated separately and we will get private consultants on board for each project.”  The agency is also thinking to organize competitions to create the best design for residential complexes.

The DDA is currently working on more than 30,000 flats. These include one, two and three BHK flats and housing for the economically weaker sections.

Sources in the DDA also indicated that the new designs will be implemented in new projects and the ongoing projects won’t see their implementation. Kumar also added that the DDA will go for third party audit of all its projects to address complaints of poor quality of construction in its projects.
