Delhi govt plans to widen single-carriageway flyovers to ease traffic load

No Comments Sub Category:Delhi-NCR Posted On: Jul 23, 2014

In a proposal to ease the increasing traffic congestion on Delhi roads, the Delhi government has plans underway to widen a number of single-carriageway flyovers and convert them into two-carriageway flyovers.

The proposal for the widening of single-carriageway flyovers into two-carriageway flyovers includes the flyovers at Moti Nagar and Punjabi Bagh – both of which were constructed in 2005; and the flyover at Rao Tula Ram Marg which was built as part of Commonwealth Games projects.

With regard to the proposal to widen the flyovers at Moti Nagar and Punjabi Bagh, an official of the Public Works Department (PWD) said that the decision to widen the two flyovers has been taken to ease the traffic congestion on the Ring Road.

Meanwhile, other than the three mentioned flyovers, also under consideration for conversion into two-carriageway flyover is the Savitri flyover – the single carriageway at Savitri Cinema near GK-II.

The Delhi Budget has already made a provision for the widening of the single-carriageway flyovers. The flyover-widening proposal in the Delhi Budget states: β€œTo keep pace with the rapid increase in volume of road traffic, a number of intersections having single-carriageway flyovers need to be made into dual-carriageway flyovers. Construction of some of the selected flyovers will be taken up on priority.”
