MNP will miss deadline of October 31
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will enable consumers to shift to any mobile operator of their choice without changing their mobile numbers for a nominal transaction fee. The implementation of MNP will once again miss its deadline of October 31, but is finally set for a pan-India rollout by the year-end after a phased launch beginning November 2010.
Mobile number portability allows you to transfer your mobile phone number from your current provider to a new mobile phone operator. Big savings can be made if you are able to get a better mobile phone tariff from a new provider. You may want to do this if you wish to sign up to a new mobile phone provider and keep your original mobile phone number, thus saving you the inconvenience of updating your contacts with your new telephone number.
Since the government’s original announcement to introduce number portability for mobile phones in December last year, MNP has been delayed thrice April 2007, March 31,2010 delayed to June 30, and finally to Oct 31, 2010. MNP will finally start rolling out from November 2010.
According to industry bodies COAI and Auspi, it will take an average of 15 days for a consumer to change his operator with a minimum wait of 50 days before the same number can be ported again. The implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) will enable consumers to shift to any mobile operator of their choice without changing their mobile numbers for a nominal transaction fee of roughly Rs 19.
