Only 30% of highly dangerous buildings have been vacated

As per the data available with BMC, out of 593, only 30 percent dangerous buildings in the city have so far been vacated. After the 7 storey building in Vakola collapsed on an adjoining chawl last week in which 7 persons got injured, the BMC is now focusing on getting evacuated the dangerous building in the city.

As per the BMC, 169 buildings are in the category of highly dangerous and need to be evacuated immediately. In those 169 buildings, 125 buildings are private buildings and 41 buildings are that of government.

Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh, in-charge of the disaster management cell, says that they will fasten up the process of vacating the dangerous buildings. But this task is not as easy. They are hiring contractors for destroying the dangerous buildings that belong to BMC.

He further added that in 111 cases of C1 structure the water and power supply has been disconnected to force the residents to leave the dangerous buildings.

According to civic record, L ward alone which consists of Kurla has the worst record with 163 dangerous building. Out of these 163 buildings 162 buildings are privately owned buildings.

Mr. Anil Kale, officer at L ward, says that they are facing difficulties in getting the dangerous building evacuated because the residents of those buildings have no other accommodation to shift to. In some cases the residents are arguing the builders to redevelop these buildings.

Mr. Deshmukh also added that they are looking for legal options to evict the residents of the buildings from C1 categories.

After the collapse of Mahim building in which 10 people died, the corporation has been focusing to use of the National Disaster Management Act to evacuate the people from the private and public C1 category structures.

At the same time, the C2 categories buildings which have been decided to be redeveloped or repaired got the approval for starting the work. Most of the buildings in this category have been identified in B ward comprising Masjid Bunder, Bhendi Bazaar and Dongri.
