Snana Purnima is one of the most auspicious festivals of Orissa. This is the first occasion in the year as per the Hindu calendar. Despite people being far away from their hometown, there was still enthusiasm of celebrating festival in Bangalore.

Snana Purnima, also known as Deba Snana Purnima, is one of the most important yatras at the world famous Puri Jagannath in Orissa. The Snana Purnima is a bathing festival celebrated on the Purnima (full moon day) of the Hindu month of Jyestha. As per tradition, the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, Sudarshan, and Madanmohan are brought out from the Jagannath Temple (Puri) and taken in a procession to the Snana Bedi (bathing Pedestal). There the deities are ceremonially bathed and decorated for a public audience with the devotees.

Snana Purnima was celebrated on June 26 at Jagannath Temple at Agra. The ceremony was organized by the Oriya Association of Bangalore. Oriyas from all over the city had assembled there on the occasion. The celebration was not only witnessed by people of Orissa but also by the team members from ISKCON temple and residence in and around Jagannath temple. The celebration takes places in morning hours on full moon day (purnima) of the Hindu month of Jyestha.

“This year there were about 3000 people from all over the city had assembled for celebration. Though the road was closed at Agra junction due to flyover construction and people faced minor problem, still people manage to assemble at Jagannath Temple for celebration of Snana Purnima.” said Manoj Patra, Secretary of the Oriya Association of Bangalore. The day started with “Pahandi” at 6 am in the morning which was continued by the Snana Yatra at around 11 am. “Pahandi” is a ritual in which idol is taken out before the yatra.

As per tradition, the Snana Vedi was decorated with traditional paintings, flags and arches (toranas). After the Snana Yatra, the deities are dressed like Lord Gensha, which is also known as “Hati Besha”. Here after this deities entered into a fortnight period of rest and recuperation. It is believed that the deities catch fever after a long bathing ritual and therefore they do not return sanctum for fifteen days. They stay away from the public view for a period of fifteen days, called Anasara, after which they appear in their Navayauvana Vesha, literally a renewed youth, on the new moon day of the Month of Ashadha. Finally comes the Ratha Yatra on the second day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashadha, when the three deities come out of the temple in a spectacular procession called “Pahandi”.
