Residents unhappy about proposed elevated rail corridor project
Mumbai- The project of elevated rail corridor from Virar to Oval Maidan, has been opposed by the residents of South Mumbai, since they are worried if it would bring down the sanctity of Oval Maidan and would risk the surrounding projects.
Requesting the authorities to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the area before initiating the project, the Oval Trust has written a letter to the state government, the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC), the Ministry of Railways and the Western Railway.
Since Maidan is the only Grade 1 heritage site at Mumbai, the project proposal seeking to build an underground station at Oval Maidan is not a good plan, states the letter.
The project may harm the safety of buildings in areas lying between the Oval Maidan and the Arabian Sea, namely, Marine Drive, Mantralaya, Nariman Point and Church Gate.
Nayana Kathpalia, a trustee of Oval Trust affirmed that an EIA of the area around and below the Maidan is very important. V Ranganathan, MHCC chairman has requested the Ministry of Railways to take necessary permissions before starting the project.
