TN government focuses on affordable housing

affordable housingSeeing the housing needs of lowing income group and economically weaker section of society, the Tamil Nadu government has declared plans to increase housing supply in these segments.

The plans include  wide range of urban and rural infrastructure moves which will enhance the housing supply. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) announced to develop over 5,922 houses in the recent announced budget 2013-14. The estimated cost of these houses would be around Rs 1,530 crore.

Currently, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (THSCB) will complete the construction work of over 18,055 residential units and will initiate the work on 12,845 more units at a cost of Rs 1,936 crore.

Both state run agencies (boards) are jointly constructing over 50,000 houses for over next three years by collecting finances from a number of schemes. The fund from these schemes will meet the housing requirements of the low income group and the economically weaker section. This programme also embraces slum redevelopment.

The government has announced to allocate Rs 500-crore for roads, water supply and underground sewerage systems in Chennai city. It has also allocated Rs 1,000 crore and  Rs 1,500 crore under Chennai Mega City Development Mission and Integrated Urban Development Mission for infrastructure respectively in last two years.

The Solar Powered Greenhouse Scheme focuses on rural housing. This Scheme is a unique  initiative by Chief Minister through which over 60,000 solar powered green houses will be constructed.

Around 1 lakh houses would be constructed in the next fiscal under India’s social welfare programme  named “Indira Awas Yojana”. This programme is an initiative by government to provide houses for rural poor people.

The government has allocated Rs 750 crore under Tamil Nadu Village Habitations Improvement Scheme for coming fiscal to cover 15,115 habitations.This programme focuses on the rural habitation and aims to develop infrastructure of villages.

In past two years, the government has taken up construction of 1.20 lakh houses at a cost of Rs 2,160 crore.
