Water audit is must for to end water woes: BMC

No Comments Sub Category:Mumbai,Uncategorized Posted On: Jul 20, 2012

While residents of Mumbai are reeling under water cuts and inequitable distribution of water, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has conceded that equal water supply in all areas cannot be realized until the water audit is complete.

The BMC officials have stated each area’s exact demand is pre requisite to ensure equal supply to all the areas. The water audit would bring out the exact percentage of water loss due to pilferage and leakage, which is said to be around 20%.

The Middle Vaitarna dam has been projected as the answer to all of Mumbai’s water woes but there remains doubt over its capacity. Currently settlements at the end of a supply line get less water than they require.

As part of the water audit, the civic body has installed “flow meters” at nine locations in the suburbs and plans to install meters in the island city, in locations like Malabar Hill, Siri Road, Ridge Road, Walkeshwar, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Girgaum, Nai-ga-on, near Mahim Church and Annie Besant Road in Worli.
