120 acres of land identified for NIT-Goa campus
In an official, written communication with the Goa MP Shantaram Naik, Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has that an area of 120 acres has been identified by the Goa Government for the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa.
In her correspondence with Naik, Irani – who was on a visit to Goa recently – said that “the land located at Cuncolim measuring about 120 acres has been indentified for the permanent campus of NIT – Goa.” She further added that the Goa Government has already commenced the process of acquiring land for the campus.
Earlier this month, NIT director professor G R C Reddy had met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has assured that the land for NIT-Goa campus will be handed over to the NIT within a period of two months.
NIT-Goa became operational in the academic year 2010-2011; but it has thus far been functioning from its temporary premises within the Goa Engineering College campus at Farmgudi in Ponda.
Initially, the total land area sought by the NIT for the Goa campus was 300 acres. However, the requirement was curtailed to 150 acres by the Goa Government after local residents protested at various locations around South Goa where land for NIT was identified.
