The Modi Government has been making attempts to revive the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) all across the country. The impasse that has been created by the UPA Government policies keeps on haunting them. In Maharashtra, only around 14 percent of the allowed Special Economic Zones are functional.

The Board of Approval or BoA of the Union Commerce Ministry has given clearance to the 123 SEZs in Maharashtra but only 18 of them have managed to clear all the hurdles that have started producing the goods and providing the services. The Maharashtra Industries Departments internal report has pointed out that around 18 SEZs which have spread over 2,527 hectares have attracted an investment worth Rs 16,524 crore.

All these SEZs have been providing jobs to around 1.26 lakh people. On the other hand the remaining 105 SEZs are at various stages of land acquisition and infrastructural development. All these SEZs have a potential to offer around Rs. 27, 166 crore investment and provide an employment of Rs 54.27 lakh people as the report said. The Special Economic Zones will face a revival hopefully by this quarter as it is being expected.
