32 four-storeyed parking lots in Mumbai
The state government offers 32 authorised public parking lots under the revised parking floor space index (FSI) policy for 30,000 vehicles in the city.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received 70 proposals out of which 32 got government’s nod, 20 of them are located in the isle of the city and nine in the western suburbs and three in the eastern suburbs.
In 2008, the government announced a policy under the Development Control Regulation (DCR) to attract private developers to build public parking spaces which would grant the builder up to four FSI in exchange for construction of parking lots.
Under the revised policy, the actual parking lot floor surfaces tend to be constrained up to four, the minimum plot area required to avail the policy has been increased from 700 sqm to 1,000 sqm in the island city and 2,000 sqm in the suburbs.
The 32 approved parking spaces which include 26 old proposal were amended and re-approved.
Once the building is done, the developers has to handover these to BMC to function. Currently the BMC has 92 working parking plots in the location under the ‘pay and park‘ program, having space to accommodate 10, 314 vehicles.
