According to source, 216 roads have been identified for widening and more than 37,000 properties across Bangalore will be affected by the proposed road-widening work to be taken up by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). If BBMP decide to pay compensation to poperty owners in cash, BBMP would have to pay nearly Rs. 10,000 crore as compensation.

Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar Inaugurating a workshop on “Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) — Pros and Cons and Town Planning Schemes”, organized by the Department of Town and Country Planning said “cost would go beyond Rs. 10,000 crore if other requirements like parks and playgrounds are taken into consideration”, and promised that the Bangalore Regional Governance Bill would be discussed in the next Legislative session. Several representatives of Town Planning Departments from Mangalore, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Hyderabad shared the “success stories” of TDR implementation in their respective cities.

Nearly 40 lakh square metres of land is supposed to be acquired for proposed road-widening work. Taking an average rate of Rs. 2,000 per square foot of market value, the BBMP needs Rs. 8,608 crore. BBMP will have to pay nearly Rs. 10,000 crore as compensation if BBMP decides to give it in cash.
