70 waste management projects approved
Union Minister of state for urban development Saugata Roy has declared that under Jawharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), 45 solid waste management projects have been approved.
Laying stress at effective solid waste management, he stated that an estimated cost of Rs 2086 crore and 70 projects at a cost of Rs 409 crore have been approved. He also added that as per capita waste generation is increasing by 1.3 per cent per year, very less attention is given to scientific disposal of waste.
Expressing his views, he conceded that there is a need for pro-active waste management approach in the country. However, he maintained that technology transfer from developed nations needs to be tailored designed for local conditions.
